AdWords Location Targeting

AdWords Location Targeting lets you target your ads to specific geographic areas like countries, regions, metros, cities, postal codes (currently U.S. only), or by targeting a radius around a location. For advanced users, you can incorporate a person's geographic interest into your targeting criteria or focus only on physical location. You can focus your advertising on specific geographic areas based on their performance or on the geographies that best match your desired coverage area. The more effective you are in targeting the right customers, the greater your return on investment.

What it does

AdWords location targeting lets you target your ads to specific geographic areas (by adding or excluding locations) like countries, regions, cities, postal codes, or by targeting a radius around a location. It also suggests locations that you might want to target and even offers you reach numbers to help you estimate the audience within your selected target location. The full list of location targeting choices around the world can be found at the AdWords API site.

Optimizing by location

Analyze your campaign performance at a local level (now as granular as ZIP Codes in the US) by using the AdWords geographic report. You might see that you're getting a better conversion rate and larger order sizes in big cities like Atlanta and Chicago. You can then optimize campaigns, bids and budgets to effectively maximize performance in your priority locations.

Bulk locations

You can post up to 1,000 locations in a given country at a time to more easily scale your campaigns. In addition, AdWords Editor version 9.8.1 now has a Locations tab that lets you add, update, and copy location targets quickly and easily.  It also supports US ZIP Codes.

Advanced location targeting

For advanced users, you can incorporate a person’s geographic interest into your targeting criteria or focus only on physical location. This has been particularly useful for advertisers in the travel industry. You can find out more in our help center.
